Common causes of delay, and how we avoid them
No soil report
Foundations designed on an assumed bearing capacity can be rejected or prove unsafe. We design from a soil report for the actual plot.
Columns that clash with the architecture
Different column positions or levels on the two drawing sets draw review comments. We overlay both sets before submission.
Added floor on an unchecked structure
Existing columns and foundations were sized for the original loads. We assess them first and design strengthening where needed.
What a structural engineer does on a Qatar project
A structural engineer decides how the building carries its loads to the ground. The loads include the building's own weight, people and furniture, wind and seismic effects. Soil and groundwater in Qatar often contain salts that attack concrete and steel reinforcement. The design therefore sets the concrete grade, the cover to reinforcement and the protection below ground, in line with QCS. The result is a set of calculations and drawings that a contractor can build from.
Extensions, added floors and modifications
Many structural projects are changes to existing buildings. Typical requests are an extra floor on a villa, a new stair opening in a slab, or removal of a wall. Structural changes like these need a permit from the Ministry of Municipality, and the permit needs structural proof. We start with the existing drawings. If they are missing, we survey the building and prepare as-built drawings first. We then check the existing foundations, columns and beams under the new loads. Where capacity is short, we design strengthening.
Structural assessment of existing buildings
A structural assessment is an engineer's report on the condition and capacity of an existing building. Owners ask for one before buying, before a change of use, or when cracks or corrosion appear. We inspect the structure, record defects and review any drawings. Where needed, we recommend material tests by a laboratory, such as concrete cores. The report states what we found, what it means for safety, and what repair we recommend.
Structural Engineering: common questions
Do I need a soil investigation for a villa in Qatar?
A soil investigation report is a normal part of the structural submission for a new building. For small extensions the requirement can differ. We confirm it for your plot before you pay for boreholes.
Can I add a floor to my existing villa?
It depends on the planning rules for your plot and the capacity of the existing structure. We check the permitted height, then assess the foundations and columns. If the structure can take the load, we prepare the permit design.
Which codes do you design to?
We design to QCS and the international design codes it refers to. QCS 2014 is the long-standing edition, and a QCS 2024 edition has been published. We confirm which edition applies before design starts.
Can you do the structural design if another firm is the architect?
Yes. We can act as structural design consultant alongside another architect. We need the architectural drawings in CAD (computer-aided design) format.
